Chapter 9

Miller wanted to confront Artel himself. He would’ve given anything to be there with a gun in his hand, facing down the morally bankrupt bastard in his own base. But someone had to be ready to take up the reins immediately. A person with the codes to get through to those individuals working outside the standard practices of Security Corps.

Instead of heading to the facility, he sent off all the information about the Gorlans to Trentin marked urgent. That way he could discuss it with his daughter when she showed up for their visit. Miller had no idea why she needed to go on the mission, but he thought it was a terrible idea.

I never thought I’d be a moral authority on anything. Miller hadn’t cared about much in a long time. When confronted with Artel, he saw a vision of what he might have become. It jarred him out of the situation hard and fast. Enough that he found himself on a different path entirely. One I’m not sure I deserve to be on. And Caden saw it too.

If Caden survived, they’d likely talk about it later. Miller felt like he had a lot of explaining to do.

After the data went off to Trentin, Miller took some time to contemplate his next move. He tried to reach out to Artel several times. The comm never connected, but he was able to track it to the facility on Mars still. His boss had not left the area yet, nor did it seem like he would any time soon.

He’s got prisoners to work with. I wonder what that’s all about really. He must be thinking of what comes next, rather than the situation with the Gorlans. Which meant Artel had confidence in the military and all they’d done lately. Good for him. I can’t share his optimism. Though I doubt that’s why he does it.

Artel’s desire to save the Empire may have been genuine. Some part of him must have felt something akin to patriotism. But his lack of empathy, his disdain for the lives of the civilians made him a monster. He was a straight sociopath and whether he knew it or not, he felt at home in his skin.

What happened to Borland’s people didn’t even make him flinch. He didn’t care that they all died, nor was he concerned for the fact they’d been framed for crimes they didn’t commit. Then there was whatever he chose to do on the surface. There must have been some plan, but Miller couldn’t see it.

The man’s at least clever. Just… morally bankrupt to the extreme.

Trentin acknowledged receipt of the information. He would’ve had it soon enough anyway. The situation with Artel escalated everything. The next thing Miller had to do was put the fleet on alert. His contacts were Captain Risler and Captain Horn. They normally answered directly to the admiralty, but he’d been given an ‘in’ with them.

Just in case something came up.

And it most certainly has. They need to organize those ships in case our people on the ground fail.
